Licensing Checks
First, check to see if the broker is licensed with the Western Australian Department of Consumer and Employment Protection. 

The Department of Consumer and Employment Protection (DOCEP) licenses mortgage brokers.  Section 4 of the DOCEP Finance Brokers Control Act (WA) 1975 states that a finance broker "means a person who
a.    as an intermediary, in the course of business negotiates or arranges loans of money for or on behalf of other persons; or
b.    in the course of business, manages loans of money arranged or negotiated by the person for or on behalf of other persons"


Look for accreditation
Secondly, you can look for accreditation with the Mortgage and Finance Association of Australia.

As an member of the Mortgage and Finance Association of Australia, look to see that the broker strictly follows the industry Code of Practice and adhere to fair business practices as well as ethical behaviour at all times. 

Personal and Professional
Lastly, when you meet with your mortgage broker, ask lots of questions, and see how you feel they respond to you.  The initial consultation should usually be free of charge and no-obligation.  Use the time to see how you feel about the broker and if you feel comfortable with them.  Most mortgage brokers are professional, friendly and great at finding competitive home loans, but if you feel that you are not getting the service you deserve, do not hesitate to say so, and perhaps look for another broker who understands your needs better.
